Oceans cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface, contain 97 percent of the Earths salt water and fresh water
is estimated only 2.5%. The supply of fresh water for human use only exists 0.02% of global water resources.
Because of steep terrain and short rivers in Taiwan, most of rainwater rapidly flows into the ocean, the actual
water consumption is only 26% of annual rainfall. It is easy to occur water shortage in the dry season
therefore Taiwan has been ranked as the 18th dry regions in the world.
Global water consumption averages about 250 liters per person per day. The daily water consumption
in Taiwan averages about 290 liters per person. Water price in Taiwan is comparatively low compared
to other countries however they can not be regenerated once we depleted natural resources.
Everyone should take action to conserve water in daily life. Many of these small actions will help us save money
and protect the environment. As long as we can save 50 liters water per day , we can save about 300 million 6,500 tons of water per year. The total amount of water we saved is equivalent to the total storage capacity
of Feitsui Reservoir. Water conservation is helpful to resolve water shortage and to protect environment as well.
The decrease of water consumption means decrease waste water and sewage discharges. According to
international water experts, they warns that the severity of water scarcity is far more than expected.
A third of the global population has water shortage problem. The water shortage problem occurred nearly 20
years earlier than estimated, such as Mainland China, India, the United States are facing water shortage crisis.
Many scholars and experts believe that, water is becoming more precious resource than oil in the 21st century,
many areas may ignite the war for struggling water resource. We should take water shortage problem as first
priority and implement water conservation in our daily life. Moreover, we should develop water recycling
technology and search alternative method for obtaining more water such as seawater desalination. The most
important effort is to protect precious water resources can be maintained permanently for our descendants.
